September Update - Spring is Springing

Spring is Coming, Time to spring into action!

First day of Spring is Wednesday, 23 September, we are all looking forward to the lighter days and warmer weather....including pests

Kiwi, Whio and our other birds are all starting their nesting period and this will be ongoing for the next 4-5 months. Trapping rats during spring is crucial as it’s when breeding and nesting birds are most vulnerable. Protect them by keeping rat numbers low. Minimizing rat predation gives the new chicks the best chance at survival

What are Pests doing in the month of September?

  • Bird nesting season - Rodent control efforts, Pulse baiting, continued trapping and more frequent trap checks needed (best time to use fresh eggs as bait, dirty duck or hen eggs covered in poop are best)

  • Possums still in mating period and can be found on the flowering Kowai Trees and other budding trees. set traps at these places

  • Stoats start breeding expect increased predation, start to think about increasing trap checks
