October Update - Wild pig sightings and materials wanted

October 05, 2026•2 min read

Already October, time has been getting away from us and The PFWS committee would like to officially announce our NEW Trapper of the month sponsor DEAD RAT LTD, with our first voucher already on its way to the winner of the June/July trapping period and the next trapper of the month for the August/September period going to be announced imminently. Keep logging your catches to be in the chance to win the next $45 Voucher to spend at www.deadrat.co.nz

If you catch us at the Waitakere Kindy Gala this weekend or the Swanson train station Market ask us about the Lures from deadrat, they smell amazing.

Wild pig sightings?

Feral pigs cause extensive damage to our bush and ecosystems and we are looking to find out more about them and how they affect our groups members and what you are doing or If you would like help doing something about them, if you have any wild pigs on your property we would love to hear from you to discuss this issue further.

Trap Material donations wanted!

We build our Tunnels and DOC200 casings ourselves and we are seeking some materials if anyone would like to donate the following materials.

Black Spray Paint

Fence Palings (H3.2 - 20,25ml, 150+)

Stainless or galvanized screws 8gx50

We take pride in the quality of the items we build and want our traps to last, so we do ask If you have any surplus of the above in fair condition or other materials that may be useful, please get in touch with us.

What are Pests doing in the month of October

  • Bird breeding season - vulnerable chicks are appearing now and will benefit greatly from your active trapping efforts with an extra focus on Rats and Muselids. Use eggs as bait in your traps (uncleaned and covered in poop are best), Continue pulse baiting and regular checking of traps.

  • Possum Night clubs still effective method for trapping, Food sources are becoming various and abundant so some creative baits and lures may be needed to get their attention

  • Stoats feeding their young still in the den this comes with a increased predation, keep those DOC200s set and monitor closely.
